REFLECTION QUESTIONDay 3 - Food & AgricultureWho did you interact with and what did you learn?
David Donaldson 11/20/2025 11:20 AMI interacted with the Education Studio and learned about Ghana-related children's books in their collection. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONDay 3 - Food & AgricultureWhat are some slight alterations you can make to your diet to make it more environmentally conscious?
David Donaldson 11/20/2025 11:19 AMEating less meat, eating seasonally, and eating locally are great ways to eat with the environment in mind. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONDay 2 - Preservation & ConservationIn your own words, what is the importance of planting native plant species?
David Donaldson 11/20/2025 11:17 AMNative plants require less water and fewer chemical inputs to thrive. They also provide habitats for wildlife! -
David Donaldson 11/19/2025 2:43 PMHappy Eco Challenge day 3! Tomorrow's coffee and Milo will be just inside Gottwald. Don't forget your reusable mug!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONDay 2 - Preservation & ConservationWhat items did you find on the cleanup, and what are some ways we can prevent waste from collecting at this site?
David Donaldson 11/19/2025 7:47 AMGlass and candy wrappers! There are trash cans in that area, but maybe some more thought should be given to placement? -
David Donaldson 11/17/2025 12:16 PMThank you to those who attended the waste audit today! We sorted all of the waste collected on the first floor of THC, during Tyler's open hours, last Friday. Here are the results:
Pre-sort Recycling: 16.02 pounds
Pre-sort Landfill: 29.11 pounds
Pre-sort Compost: 8.56 pounds
Post-sort Recycling: 7.06
Post-sort Landfill: 11.15
Post-sort Compost: 38.22
That's a lot of compostable waste in the wrong bins. Almost everything at our dining locations is compostable, from the straws and forks to the food and paper clamshells (many of the plastic ones too), and many of the cups. Most of these items say "compostable" right on them. You just have to read :-) Also, food is always compostable. There was a lot of food in both the landfill and recycling bins.
What can be recycled? #1, #2, and #5 plastics, cardboard and paper, aluminum, and glass. Bananas and chip bags cannot be recycled.
If you're just not sure, go landfill.
Lastly, sort, don't stuff. One of the worst things you can do is shove it all back in the bag and blindly toss it all in the same bin (unless you've determined it all actually goes in the same bin).
By doing this exercise today, we were able to take it from diverting 46% of the waste to diverting 84% of the waste (which means 38% of the collected waste was in the wrong bin). All we had to do was take the time to sort. Properly sorting waste makes a big difference!
PS - receipts always go to the landfill.

REFLECTION QUESTIONDay 1 - Rethink WasteWhat is another way you could engage with the Spider Exchange this school year? Ex: "Shopping" for holiday gifts.
David Donaldson 11/17/2025 11:59 AMI always look for books. Plenty of recreational reading options! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONDay 1 - Rethink WasteWhat did you fill up on, or what do you wish you could fill up on? How could UR facilitate more access to refills?
David Donaldson 11/17/2025 11:59 AMLaundry powder! You don't need to go out and buy a new plastic jug each time. Add an Eco Inspired stop to one of the shuttle routes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONDay 1 - Rethink WasteWhat was one item that was commonly sorted incorrectly, and what ideas do you have to prevent this in the future?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONDay 1 - Rethink WasteWhy do you think contamination is one of the largest problems we have with waste diversion at UR? How could we improve our diversion success?
David Donaldson 11/17/2025 11:57 AMWe need people to take the time to learn where different items go. That's it. Take the time to learn. Consistency in available items across campus.
