Amy's actions
Day 1 - Conservation & Biodiversity
JOIN AN OUTDOOR PROJECT
I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community this week.
Day 2 - Community & Justice
BUY FROM A FARMERS MARKET
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Day 2 - Community & Justice
Support Local Organizations Serving Animals
Costa Rica is known for the prevalence of stray dogs. Territorio de Zaguates is a dog sanctuary famous for its efforts to rescue, neuter, and rehome thousands of dogs. Today, I will read about and/or donate to Tierra de Zaguates or register to volunteer at local animal shelter.
Day 2 - Community & Justice
HELP OTHERS
I will offer to help two people who are in need each day this week.
Day 2 - Community & Justice
SHOP WOMEN-OWNED
I will shop from two women-owned businesses this week.
Day 3 - Food & Water
GO MEATLESS
I will enjoy three meatless meals per day.
Day 3 - Food & Water
PLAN YOUR MEALS
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu and only buying the ingredients I need.
Day 3 - Food & Water
COMPOST FOOD SCRAPS
I will participate in the composting program on campus or compost my food scraps at home.
Day 3 - Food & Water
SMART LAUNDRY
I will conserve water and energy by only doing full loads of laundry in cold water.
Day 4 - Climate Crisis
TURN IT OFF
I will keep lights, electronics and appliances turned off when not using them.
Day 5 - Rethink Waste
REfuse: Receipts
I will refuse receipts whenever possible. Receipts are everywhere in our lives and on campus. The majority of them contain some amount of some type of plastic. Therefore, they cannot be recycled or composted. Nothing says you HAVE to get a receipt. Often, email receipts, text receipts, or no receipt are all options.
Day 5 - Rethink Waste
REduce & REuse: Water
In place of purchasing single-use water bottles, I pledge to regularly carry my reusable water bottle and utilize the many campus bottle fillers everyday.
Day 5 - Rethink Waste
REthink & REuse: Refill
I will visit a local refill store to fill up on bulk items and reduce purchasing of plastic. Refill shops not only allow you to refill containers instead of buying new, but they also carry numerous plastic-free swaps for many of the single use items available at traditional retailers.

Amy Bergmann 11/22/2024 8:48 PMI am lucky to have visited Costa Rica. It is a beautiful country and it was fun this week to remember things from my visit. One random thing I enjoyed seeing in Costa Rica were "living" fences. To make a living fence, you take a cutting from an existing tree, stick it in the ground, and it will grow thanks to the rich soil. Anywhere else you would just have a stick in the ground, but in Costa Rica a cut branch inserted into soil makes a new, small tree. Plant all in a row and you have a living fence. Brilliant and better for the environment than a "dead" fence! -
Amy Bergmann 11/21/2024 4:38 PMI just realized that selecting my action items for each day instead of selecting them all at the beginning means it didn't start tallying my vegan meals until day 3! It only has me down at this point (Thursday evening) for 6 vegan meals, but in reality all my meals are vegan. Trying to earn some extra team points to make up for my oversight by posting about this! :-) -
Amy Bergmann 11/20/2024 2:50 PMThe IEW Costa Rica Fair was great! Had a delicious vegan plantain dish (extremely delicious!) and played a fun, but tragic, game highlighting forest fragmentation and the effect on animals. My animal was the Coati and unfortunately I did not survive. :-( -
Amy Bergmann 11/19/2024 12:59 PMI am thrilled that the plight of stray dogs and pet overpopulation was addressed in the eco-challenge (even though I am sad that such a plight exists at all). It was really interesting to see all the dogs at the rescue in Costa Rica. I have 4 rescue dogs (and a rescue horse), so this is a subject very important to me. Environmental aspects covered in the feature included how they manage the droppings from 1800 dogs (!) in an environmentally sound way. -
Amy Bergmann 11/18/2024 8:53 PMI was out of the office today and didn't get to participate as much as normal, so I'd better make the rest of the week count! :-)
